News from Guatemala - August 2018

Rachel & Oscar Mendoza

Life has returned, more or less, to normal here in Antigua since the eruption of the volcano. The relief efforts are now focussed on the long term rehousing of the families and communities that were displaced, we send our thanks to all who gave to the Elim Relief Appeal and we know that those gifts will go to rebuilding homes and lives here in Guatemala.

Here is a short update on all that has been happening with us and with the Light House...

Youth Club

mendoza-aug18-1We have been focussing a lot on the Youth Club in recent months, as this is our newest project. We love these kids! It has been so wonderful to see how community has developed in this group here at the Light House, at first they were so shy and awkward (as teenagers can be!) but now, it is a challenge to control the noise level on a Saturday night!

We have been trying to organise a retreat day for them, but we have had trouble getting a team together to do it - it is something that would take more than just the two of us. We have reached out to some friends, and partnership ministries here in Antigua, so please pray that this will come together and will be something great for our teens.

Residency Application

For those following our residency journey, we have the stamps in our passports and all the official documents needed! We’re done!! Thank you all for your prayers through the whole process, it is a relief and a joy to have our residency.

mendoza-aug18-4Our wonderful volunteer, Courtney, who has been helping us out from the very start, is moving on to new things. She is leaving Guatemala at the beginning of September and we will miss her! She has been so good with the kids, and even started the Bible reading times that YWAM have been doing with us. We are so grateful to her for all she has done and all she has given so selflessly.

mendoza-aug18-5We have been praying for some people to come on board to help, as we are very aware that with Courtney going it would be just the two of us again. And we are so grateful to our dear friends, Gerardo and Corina, who have agreed to come and help us out for the last few months of this year. It is such a blessing at just the right time, please pray for them as they start working with us, and for their two children Jean and Joseph who will be joining the Light House club too!

Guests of Honour

mendoza-aug18-6We cannot forget our very special visitors this month, Oscar’s mum and his niece Abby! They came from El Salvador to visit us for a long weekend, it was Oscar’s mum’s first ever trip out of the country!

It was so lovely to have them here and spend time with family. Abby came to youth club and to Light House club and was such a natural with the kids. It was a real pleasure to have her there, and the kids are already asking when she’s going to come back!

Prayer Points

Please pray for

  • For our youth club, that we would be able to plan and run a retreat day for them.
  • For Courtney as she moves on, for a smooth transition out of Guatemala and peace as she says goodbye.
  • For Gerardo and Corina and their family as they come to work with us.
  • For the children and families of the Light House.
  • Protection, health and safety.
