Laurie Korchinsky

South Africa

I am Laurie and I grew up in Stockport, Manchester. I moved to Edinburgh, Scotland in 2005, to study History, and lived there until 2016. I've worked for Edinburgh Elim and been part of the Scottish Regional Youth.

I am currently serving at Hope Town – All Nation's base in Ocean View providing young people with a passion and purpose. This involves helping at the 'Hope Education Centre' with tutoring, leading church community, teaching skills-based training, discipleship, and raising local leaders.

My Journey

I have had a heart for missions since I first went to Bolivia in 2007.  Since then I have taken many short-term opportunities to test this call, including going to Rwanda with Elim in 2010, and visiting long-term Elim missionaries in Jordan and Israel.

In 2015 I felt God's call to longer-term mission  and had an opportunity to visit All Nations in Cape Town, South Africa. AllNations was started by Floyd McClung in the early '90s. Their vision is to make disciples, train leaders, and ignite church planting movements among the neglected peoples of the earth. After this visit I felt God leading me to do their 5 month training course (February – July 2017). During this time I had teaching on how to minister cross-culturally and then spent 10 weeks in Uganda leading a team church planting amongst an unreached Muslim people group. We had the privilege of leading several to Christ and being able to baptise them.

I have now joined the volunteer staff at All Nations in partnership with Elim and am serving in a township called 'Ocean View', formed during Apartheid. Ocean View faces multiple challenges including a high level of unemployment, drugs, crime, prostitution, and young people dropping out of school.

All Nations have worked in Ocean View for over 10 years and last year were able to buy property for a base called 'Hope Town', a base for church, education and tutoring, and business and skills training.

My Vision

In an environment where young people suffer a lot of trauma, and grief is a normal part of their lives, Hope Town aims to show them how to live life with passion and purpose, to introduce them to the love of the Father and give them a new vision for their lives.

My long-term vision is to minister in the Middle East. I have a desire to see Muslims experience the love of Jesus and to show God's heart for reconciliation in a troubled and conflicted area.  I will be visiting All Nation's work in Lebanon and Jordan this next year.

I am based in South Africa for 2018 while being prepared to be sent out to the Middle East – do keep in touch if you would like to receive updates! I would love to hear from you.
