News from Guatemala - July 2017

Rachel & Oscar Mendoza

Well, we need to start with a HUGE thank you to all of you who have signed up and started sponsoring children at the Light House. The wonderful news is that we already have the rent covered on the building, we are so grateful to God for that and to all of you - this would not be happening without the generosity and involvement of people back home in the UK.

Furlough

Newsletter-July-17-2

We had a wonderful time back in England on furlough. We must say another thank you to all our friends, family and even strangers who welcomed us back in such a generous, loving way. We felt truly taken care of in so many ways. One highlight for us was our time spent with our Elim Missions family at the missionary conference and then later at the Elim Leadership Summit. We were overwhelmed at the love and honour we received from our leaders and pastors there. It was a real time of encouragement and reviving vision for all that we are doing.

Rainy Season

On our return to Guatemala we found a few problems at the Light House - as the rainy season had started it revealed a number of significant leaks in the building. However, our land lord responded quickly (with a bit of chasing!) He fixed the roof, and due to the damage put in a whole new ceiling in the classroom. What a relief!

Reading Books

Newsletter-July-17-5

When we were back in the UK we remembered how easy it is to get toys and games, and in particular, books - that had been something we had really struggled to get over here as kids books in Spanish are expensive. It frustrated us a little. So, when we got back, we were very excited to get hold of a small collection of novels in Spanish for the older kids to read. They have responded to them well (some more enthusiastically than others!) But we are really happy to be able to encourage and support them in this area of their education.

All Go

You may remember that we shared the need to find a green space to use so that the kids could run around and expend their enormous amounts of energy! That is quite a challenge over here, green areas are hard to come by. So it is such an answer to prayer that we have been able to start renting this garden space on a regular basis. We now run the first hour of Light House club at the garden, which is so much fun for the kids. It has also had the desired effect of making the time in the Light House much calmer and more ordered.

Newsletter-July-17-8We have been able to have good one-on-one time with the kids and more conversation with them during quiet play at the Light House When we started the Light House up again after our time in the UK, we were a little nervous about whether all the kids would come back and if they would remember! But it was amazing, on the first day they were all there ready and waiting, excited to be back and it made us so so happy! We had missed them and it was good to be all together again.

Our Voulunteer

This week we have received our first short term volunteer! His name is Isaac and he is doing an amazing job here. He has been playing a lot of football with the boys, even doing some football skills training - which they love! Oscar and Isaac are also building a little wooden playhouse for the kids.. pics to follow on completion! We have Isaac with us for another week, please pray for him and his time here in Guatemala.

Prayer Points

  • For relationship with the children at the Light House and with their families. That we will have good standing in the community.
  • Deeper encounters with the Father’s love, that we will pass this on to the children.
  • Protection, safety & health.
  • Isaac, our short term volunteer. That God would use him to bless the kids, but that he would also be blessed and impacted by God’s love during his time here.
  • This new season in the Light House. That God’s presence would rest on everything we do, on us and on the kids… that’s the most important thing!
