PRESS RELEASE

Elim Church issues statement on the dignity of human life amid national policy shifts

26 June 2025

We welcome the National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast, which was held on Tuesday 24 June. During the breakfast, the impact of Christian values on the very fabric of British society was powerfully articulated.

Florence Eshalomi MP read from chapter 18, verses 28 to 37 of the Gospel of John, which included the powerful words of Jesus, ‘Everyone on the side of truth listens to me’. During his address, Professor John Lennox, reminded the audience of the importance of faith in the Public Square. He reminded the parliamentarians present that values such as equality, dignity and human rights are deeply embedded in the Christian Worldview.

In light of the message of the National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast, the Elim Pentecostal Church pleads with parliamentarians to reconsider the implications of the pieces of legislation that almost completely decriminalise abortion on the one hand and gave the go ahead to assisted dying on the other.

The Elim Movement has released a statement responding to these significant developments in UK public policy. The statement also reflects on continued national and international challenges such as illegal migration and global conflict.

In the light of the important message of the National Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast, the statement, which is included below, sets out Elim’s deeply held belief in the God-given dignity and worth of every human life; it voices concern over the erosion of a cohesive moral framework that honours the sanctity of life in all its stages and conditions.

We are grateful for the work of all parliamentarians and assure them of our prayers.

We pray that all parliamentarians will consider the importance of human dignity from conception to natural death and that our lawmakers will ensure that these values are applied consistently and compassionately, rejecting the belief that a just and compassionate society pits the rights of an unborn child with the rites of their mother, or spends time and money on assisted dying rather than improving palliative care and support.

It is undemocratic and deeply problematic that only two hours of parliamentary time was given to the discussion of the seismic change in legislation around abortion.

We call for parliamentarians to revisit that issue as a matter of urgency.

We plead with peers to engage in rigorous interrogation of the Assisted Dying Terminally Ill Adults Bill.

Lastly, we call on all Christians to pray for our nation and for our national leaders.
