Conference to look at issues impacting humanity

In today’s rapidly changing culture, it is more important than ever that the Church is confident in what it believes and how it takes its place in public life. To assist this, Elim has planned a  theological conference where Elim Church leaders will look at issues current impacting humanity and discuss how the church should respond.

Taking place at Hayes Conference Centre in February 2019, the Elim Theological Conference will provide space for Elim leaders to engage with thought-provoking presentations and create dialogue around key issues of technology, identity and gender fluidity.

"The aim is to see what impact they are having on our world today and how leaders within the church can provide dignity and remember that every life matters," says Dave Newton, Elim's Director of Training.

The questions surrounding humanity are not only accelerating in contemporary society but are approaching from all angles.

When does life begin? Which life matters most? How do we express love, intimacy and affection to one another? Who or what determines our gender or identity? How do we welcome the stranger? Will humans be surplus to requirement in a future world?

This can leave Christians questioning what they have stood for and stood by for years, wondering how to reflect the nature and character of God to humanity in the changing world.

Vaughan Roberts highlights in the book 'The Porn Game' that many of us “find ourselves in unfamiliar territory ill-equipped to deal with it.” Many Christians find it easier to protest and rage against change rather than humbly and carefully discern what God is saying to the church through his truth revealing Word.

The Elim Theological Conference will be investigating many of the hard questions about sexuality, identity, gender, technology and freedom, seeking to provide a safe space for discussion and robust thinking in many of these key areas.

Commenting on the conference, Chris Cartwright, Elim's General Superintendent, said: “I want to encourage you not to miss out on this unique opportunity to engage with issues directly relevant to the coalface of ministry.”

The event will host the following ‘thought leaders’ who will combine a blend of expert biblical, practical and theological perspectives presented alongside space for questions and discussion.
