Using the appliance of science for mission trip
Medical scientist Sharlom Chaitika shares how a mission trip to Eswatini deepened her faith and brought hope through science and service.
Medical scientist Sharlom Chaitika is a member of Elim Telford and recently felt led to undertake a short-term mission to Eswatini in southern Africa. Stepping out of her comfort zone was not easy but it was certainly worthwhile, as she describes…
As a scientist specialising in haematology and biochemistry, I’ve spent years using my skills in a hospital setting – but I’ve always felt there was something more God was calling me to do. I felt called to go and serve, so I reached out to my church leadership, who directed me to the Elim Missions department.
When I learned about the opportunity to volunteer in Eswatini with Challenge Ministries, I knew in my heart that this was God’s prompting to step out in faith. Last August, I travelled to the rural town of Bulembu in Eswatini. Travelling alone felt daunting at times, but from the moment I arrived I was overwhelmed by the warmth of the Challenge Ministries team.
Their dedication to transforming the lives of the people of Eswatini was inspiring, and I quickly realised that this trip was about far more than sharing my scientific knowledge – it would demonstrate God’s love in practical ways.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my time in Bulembu was engaging with the schoolchildren and encouraging them to dream big. Through interactive food testing activities, I introduced them to concepts in science and healthcare that demonstrated scientific principles in an accessible way.
I also had the privilege of sharing my own career journey – showing them that God has a purpose for each of us. Seeing their enthusiasm and hunger to learn reminded me that we are all called to be a light in the lives of others, using the gifts God has given us to inspire and uplift.
Beyond the classroom, I was able to assist in the Bulembu medical centre, working alongside Dr Wiseman and his wife, Sharon. Their heart for serving the community was humbling, and hearing their stories of faith and perseverance deeply impacted me. I was reminded that in everything we do – whether in medicine, education, or any other field – our ultimate calling is to serve others as Christ did.
One of the things that has stuck with me the most was seeing how Challenge Ministries’ holistic approach to childcare truly empowers the young people. Many of the people I met had grown up to pursue meaningful careers, returning to the town qualified, and ready to work – a testament to the power of inspiration and representation.
Visiting the rehabilitation centres also gave me a deeper appreciation for the structured programmes that help individuals struggling with addiction – a prevalent challenge in Eswatini due to the high rates of HIV/AIDS.
Throughout my time in Eswatini, my faith was strengthened in ways I never expected. Each morning, I joined in prayer and Bible study with the team, and these times became a source of renewal and encouragement.
I came to understand that mission work is not just about what we bring – it’s also about how God transforms us in the process. Stepping out of my comfort zone allowed me to grow spiritually and trust the Lord more deeply.
As I reflect on my journey, I am more passionate than ever about the work of Challenge Ministries and the incredible ways they are changing lives. I truly believe that God calls each of us to serve in different ways, and if you feel a stirring in your heart to step out in faith, I encourage you to consider joining a mission trip. Whether you’re a healthcare professional, a teacher, a plumber, an artist, an athlete or simply someone with a heart for service, God can use you in ways beyond your imagination.
If you are interested in volunteering, I would encourage you to connect with the Elim Missions team. Let’s continue to be the hands and feet of Jesus, bringing hope and transformation to communities in need.
