Join our Day of Prayer on Pentecost Sunday 2020

Mark Pentecost Sunday when Christians recall how God’s Holy Spirit was given to the disciples after Jesus’ ascension, empowering them to begin the work of making disciples of all nations. Join our special Day of Prayer on Sunday 31 May 2020 at 9 am and 7 pm.

The day of Pentecost birthed the church and launched the mission of God anew. Founded on God’s promise to send Holy Spirit those early disciples waited in prayer. As they prayed God responded and sent Holy Spirit who comes with power.

What was it that transformed a semi-defeated group of disciples in an upper room in Jerusalem into a highly energised, Holy Spirit empowered, life-giving church whose message and example lives on today? The Holy Spirit made the difference and still makes the difference in each of our lives to transform and empower.

Let’s make the most of this opportunity to gather online in united prayer. Let’s pray for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit and a harvest of souls to the Kingdom!

As well as praying at home throughout the day, you can join us on Elim's Facebook Live at 9 am and 7 pm at elim.org.uk/facebook or on YouTube at elim.org.uk/youtubeWe look forward to bringing our prayers together for the healing of our people and our land.

Pentecost Sunday Prayer Guide

Key Verses

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.  They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.   All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1-4

‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.  Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.  I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.   The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.  And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’ Acts 2:16-21

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.  Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.  All the believers were together and had everything in common.   They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.   Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.  praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Acts 2:42-47

PRAYER FOR HOLY SPIRIT - 9 am prayer focus

As we read through Acts, we see God giving the disciples power – to perform miracles, to lead people to faith and salvation in Christ, to operate in the supernatural gifts of the Spirit. Daily they saw people come to faith.

They shared community and devoted themselves to prayer, fellowship, breaking of bread and teaching, to appoint leaders and meet needs. These disciples led truly empowered lives as they welcomed the presence of the Holy Spirit. In the face of challenging circumstances, real persecution, loss and uncertainty they knew what it was to live in the promise of God’s presence and power with them. We can too.

Imagine what can happen in our lives if we live in and live out the promise of God the Holy Spirit actively working, dwelling, moving in and through our lives?

PRAYING FOR A HARVEST AND SALVATION - 7 pm prayer focus

The result of Holy Spirit coming was lives transformed, communities changed and the gospel launched world-wide! Daily people were being saved. Everyone who calls on his name will be saved. In this unprecedented time, there is an openness to prayer, faith and spirituality. Let’s pray for a great harvest!

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” Matthew 9:36-37 (NLT)

IDEA: PRAYER WALK

As you pray on Pentecost Sunday, why not take some time to prayer walk your community? As you do ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to the spiritual reality. Pray with faith and insight. Ask for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit’s presence, power and peace. Declare and speak life and hope. Ask for the Holy Spirit to open blind eyes to the love and grace of Jesus.

Let’s make the most of this opportunity, to gather in united prayer online on Sunday 31 May at 9 am & 7 pm at elim.org.uk/facebook.
